Horry County History Museum and the associated L.W. Paul Living History Farm are great organizations that help bring history to life. Throughout the year, they host a variety of events meant to engage the public and encourage an interest in the past. Lots of hands-on activities take place at L.W. Paul Living History Farm! One upcoming event- which also happens to be a fan favorite- is Smokehouse Day!

From 9 AM until 12 PM on January 22, join L.W. Paul Living History Farm in celebrating pigs! "Back in the day," pork was cured in winter, as families depended on home-preserved foods when the colder months rolled around. During Smokehouse Day, staff and volunteers will demonstrate how this process was completed. Guests can witness the carving and preparation of pork, salting and curing in the smokehouse, cooking headcheese and sausage, making lye soap, cooking on a wood burning stove, and more! You'll be transported into the past as you become absorbed in the pork curing process. It is something that you'll never forget!

Don't fret if you can't make it to Smokehouse Day. There are plenty of other immersive events that you can check out! On January 8, you can check out a butter making demonstration or a talk by Kevin Mitchell (author of a cool new cookbook focused on South Carolina's historic and iconic dishes). Later, on January 28, you can come by for a soapmaking demonstration! Keep an eye on facebook for other upcoming events.
